If you love dogs this book is an absolute gem. It's not going to explain to you how to feed or train your dog. There's no advice on first aid or when you should seek advice from the vet. What you get are seventy two essays on subjects which dog lovers ponder on, each one just two or three pages long and written in terms which the layman can understand. I've opened the book at random and found Why Do Dogs Touch Noses?, Do Dogs Recognize Themselves in a Mirror? and Why Do Puppies Sleep in a Pile? There's nothing there that you absolutely have to know so that you can keep a dog as he should be kept but by the time that you've finished you will know him a lot better.

Each essay is delivered in a chatty manner and even relatively complex subjects are more than comprehensible. My eyes usually glaze over when I get to topics such as Are Dogs Just Tame Wolves? which involves discussion of DNA but I found myself nodding at least a little more wisely than I did before I read the piece. Each essay is entertaining and informative in its own right. There's a quiet authority about them all.

It's almost inevitable that you will succumb to 'I'll just read one more before...' I read right through in just a couple of sittings and every time I open the book I find myself reading more than I intend. It's also excellent for picking a piece out at random or just selecting an essay that you find interesting. They're arranged in loosely associated groups but each reads well on its own and if you feel the need to look further into a subject there's plenty of suggested further reading.

Do Dogs Dream? Well, of course they do - and there's even a hint about the subjects too.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
