Jack loves receiving praise, handshakes, pats on the back and prizes when he undertakes his many brave feats. He hates it when people kiss him though. Kisses are yuk! He's faced with a huge family who loves planting smackers on his cheeks. Yucker. He hatches a plan to keep his face slobber-free.
Kisses Are Yuk! is hilarious. Jack is such an amusing little boy, pulling a variety of disgusted faces as he gradually gets covered with more and more lipstick. There comes a time when every child turns their nose up at kisses, and this taps into it perfectly. Jack's family are great fun too - particular favourites include Granny Groover who kisses like a Hoover, and discovering that Cousin Lily's [kisses] were horribly licky.
There's a strong set of rhymes throughout, and plenty of actions that can be carried out to make your little one jokingly recoil. Of course, it all builds to a sweet ending, but I shall let you discover Jack's secret for yourself.
Erica-Jane Waters' illustrations are gorgeous. They've got the perfect blend of quirky slobberiness, tongue-in-cheek disgust, and friendly charm. There's so much happening on each page that you'll love poring over it. It's great fun. Highly recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
If you don't think kisses are yuk, then take a look at A Pocketful of Kisses by Angela McAllister and Sue Hellard. Hattie the Bad by Jane Devlin and Joe Berger has a similar quirky sense of humour to Kisses Are Yuk!
