As one of a specially written series of bible stories for toddlers, this board book tells the Easter story in a very simplified way. It would work well for the very young who you perhaps would like to experience a taste of bible stories without going into too much detail.

This board book is written in a very simple way, with just one or two sentences per page that make it suitable for very young toddlers, or perhaps might be useful for those who are just trying to learn to read for themselves. Dealing with the Easter story it uses easy to understand language, so Jesus doesn't have the passover supper with his disciples, but rather eats a special supper with his friends. It misses out the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, but we still get a crowd of people shouting Kill him! Kill him! when Jesus is brought before Pilate. We see the crucifixion, and the stone that has been rolled away from the tomb before learning that Jesus is alive.

The illustrations through the book are lovely and colourful. The characters are simply drawn, with appealing faces and expressions. The one image I wasn't too sure about was the picture of the crucifixion. It's a clear image of Jesus nailed to a cross (with the two other men on crosses behind him) and something just looked a little out of place to me - perhaps that such sweetly drawn cartoon character figures are drawn hanging from a cross. Or perhaps it's the expression on Jesus' face which is a sort of surprised, unhappy look and just seemed too simplified for such a complex, disturbing moment. Anyway, it didn't seem to make an impression on my four year old as she just took it all in her stride as we read, but I still feel a little uncomfortable looking at it now.

I think this is a nice book, but there are others about the Easter story available and my personal preference as a book to buy would be for The Story of Easter rather than this one as this is perhaps just a little too basic. If you were looking for something to share with a baby then perhaps this would be a good place to start, but I think older toddlers would want just a little more substance to the story.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.

Further reading suggestion: The Story of Easter by Juliet David and Steve Whitlow or Simon and the Easter Miracle: A Traditional Tale for Easter by Mary Joslin and Anna Luraschi but if you're looking for something suitable for Easter that isn't religious then try Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld. Older children will appreciate The Lion Bible in its Time by Lois Rock and Steve Noon.
