Summary: Have you ever wondered what the differences are between gogglynippers, nooglebooglers or difflebugs? Probably not unless you have read any of the McDoogle's Monster Farm stories by James McNight and Mark Chambers. All of these unusual creatures live on the farm and each have very special gifts. However only one of these creatures is able to glow in the dark and that is the noogleboogler. In this entertaining story, this turns out to be a very welcome gift indeed!

Farmer and Mrs McDoogle are throwing a party for all their friends and for the people who visit the farm throughout the year. The barn has been decorated, Mrs McDoogle has prepared plenty of food and one of the monsters, Diggle, is acting as DJ and playing all of their favourite music. Soon the guests and some of the better behaved monsters start arriving. However, just as the party is getting into full swing, calamity strikes with the music stopping and all the lights going out. The machine that turns poo from the gogglynippers into electricity has broken down.

It looks as if the party will have to end until Diggle comes up with an idea. This involves going to the field and picking leaves from the difflebug plants that he feeds to the nooglebooglers with what I can only describe as illuminating results. This is because, when they eat these leave, nooglebooglers' special ability is glowing in the dark – just what is needed to keep the party going.

'Only Nooglebooglers glow in the Dark' is a simple fun story that I feel sure will appeal to many children, especially those who like the idea of the monsters' poo making the electricity work. The book is full of weird and wonderful creatures who are also perfectly illustrated by Mark Chambers. His humorous pictures match the story perfectly and the multicoloured hairy (and sometimes hideous) monsters are very well depicted. All of the pages are very attractive with lots of little details which are worth taking some time over.

We found the story quite entertaining and although it is well written, it is quite difficult to read out loud mainly due to all of the strange tongue twisting names of the monsters. I often found myself stumbling over my words as I read the story with my daughter. I guess I just need a bit more practice. Apart from their names being hard to pronounce, these monsters are very appealing and will probably be loved by both boys and girls.

As well as the story, you will also find the 'McDoogle's Monster Farm Field Guide' within this book. This guide introduces the farm and provides some wonderful descriptions of the various monsters and plants that you might find there.

Overall 'Only Nooglebooglers Glow in the Dark' is a highly entertaining and amusing book. At the moment, there is one other book in the series but I suspect that there will be more to come.

If this book sound fun, why not also take a look at The Beasties by Jenny Nimmo and Gwen Millward.
