Titch and Mitch are two little pixies who have run away from home. Through a series of misadventures they find themselves shipwrecked on an island, and the story revolves around them making new friends there. They come to the rescue of a strange coloured seagull, they save a trapped fairy, they play dentist for a little dragon mouse and they aid and abet an intelligent turkey who is trying to escape from the turkey farm.
The stories are reminiscent of Enid Blyton, with pixies and fairies and chatty animals, only they don't seem to have the same zing that I would've liked. I think I didn't feel particularly drawn to Titch and Mitch as characters, so that didn't help, because there wasn't anything particularly special or exciting about them. There are some great story ideas here though, and any fans of the fairy and talking animals genre will probably be content. I liked the idea of a dragon mouse, and hopefully through the series some other interesting fantasy animals will be introduced.
I think my favourite story concerned the intelligent turkey, Wiffen, who is on a mission to escape. Mitch and Titch help him to get out of the barn where all the turkeys are kept and then help him to find somewhere to live. The turkey is friendly with the farmer's dog, Perry, and after their escape they decide to set up house together which made me smile.
The illustrations are lovely. They're all in black and white but they have that lovely old fashioned feel to them and they do help add to the story. There are lots of pictures all the way through, so this would be a good book for a young reader who is growing in confidence to try as they could use the pictures for clues as to what they're reading about.
The ending was a little disappointing as the book just seemed to suddenly stop abuptly, with nothing to tie it off or set up for the sequel. Perhaps younger readers won't mind that kind of thing and will simply turn to the next book to see what happens next.
