Prince Jake (or Jacob Leopold Gregorio the Fourth to give him his full name) is a member of the Moranian royal family. He lives with his mother, father, annoying older sister Petunia, and adoring younger brother Ned. He's a bit of a prankster is our Jake, and can't resist an opportunity to do something that'll get him told off. When the Pratzian royal family visit, Jake can't help but play a trick on the irritatingly smug Prince Rupert.

I loved Sticky Gum Fun, as well as It's Snow Joke. I can't wait to read the other books in the Prince Jake series. They're great fun. Jake's a wonderful person for kids to identify with; although he gets into trouble, his heart's always in the right place. Setting it in a royal family gives him the opportunity to do more than most kids could, which adds an extra layer of excitement. He's still down to earth and not spoiled in the slightest.

Mark Beech's pen and ink illustrations are also great. They're bold and quirky, feeding into the reader's imagination, rather than replacing it. They sit perfectly with the text. I also particularly enjoyed the touch of including a sample chapter from the next book in the series - there's enough of it to feel like real value for money, rather than just selling the next book. With a series this enjoyable, you'll be wanting to read all the books anyway!

They're perfect books for confident readers looking to immerse themselves in a thrilling new world. The characters immediately feel like your close friends, and you're involved with their pranks and adventures. The writing style is wonderfully clear, and helps create a fun atmosphere. I simply couldn't fault the books in any way. Buy them. Read them. Love them.

For the record, I have to declare an interest here: Sue Mongredien is a fellow Bookbag reviewer. I've reviewed her books with the understanding that if I didn't like them, I'd say. Luckily I liked them! The fact that I've raved unreservedly about Sticky Gum Fun might make it harder for you to believe that, but it's the truth!

Sir Bigwart: Knight of the Wonky Table by Alan MacDonald is another fun series set in a castle. If you want wizards instead of princes, then check out the Oliver Moon books.
