Summary: A lovely look at a group of three animals who are scared of the Monster Of The Woods. It's a gentle and charming book that will help any scared children feel a little less scared about the dark, thunder or monsters. The illustrations are particularly enjoyable.

The Monster Of The Woods is roaming around. Mouse and Rabbit are scared; they don't know what to do. Thankfully, Owl has drawn up a plan: they're to lock the door, pull the curtains shut and pretend they're not at home. It's foolproof. On a dark and stormy night, they put the plan to the test. There's a tappity tap on the door...

Tappity-Tap! What Was That? may sound scary, but it isn't. Mouse, Rabbit and Owl are a set of dafties who work themselves up into a frenzy. Everything works out alright, and it's a gentle reminder for children that things aren't as scary as they may seem. It's a lovely book for any child who's a little scared of the dark, thunder or monsters. It's great fun as a story in its own right too.

Russell Julian's illustrations are glorious. The pages burst with life. Our three heroes are cuddly and friendly. They're scared enough for us to feel for them, but not so scared that we're worried. Every page is packed with lots of background detail to pore over - I particularly liked the plan for what to do if you're stuck up a tall tree. Everything looks absolutely gorgeous.

Tappity-Tap! What Was That? is a great addition to any book collection. It's lots of fun.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Another excellent book dealing with a gentle sense of fear is Lynley Dodd's The Dudgeon is Coming. Bear Feels Scared by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman has a lovely gang of woodland animals too.
