Mr Troll has a headache. The Billy Goats Fluff keep trip-trapping over his bridge, making an awful racket. He's not happy one little bit. He's cursing the newspaper advert that brought him under the bridge, and desperate for something to stop the goats from ruining his life. Whatever can a troll do in those circumstances?

The Three Billy Goats Fluff is a fun twist on the Billy Goats Gruff fairy tale. Seeing things from the troll's point of view immediately has kids giggling along as their expectations are turned on their head. This is cranked up with plenty of light-hearted silliness and the troll getting crosser and crosser. Everything is played for laughs, although within that, children will pick up on the importance of considering things from the point of view of others. The warm-hearted ending is a nice touch too, as consideration and helping others lead to happiness all round.

Liz Pichon's illustrations suit the text with their bright, cartoon style. The goats are suitably sweet, the troll big, green and gruesome. Although the troll features heavily, there's nothing at all to scare even the most sensitive of souls. Each page is packed with plenty of action and excitement, which makes it an enjoyable read from start to finish.

The vocabulary is accessible for all ages, yet with plenty of nice touches that ensures children will enjoy reading it as they get a little older too. The writing style is crisp and clear, reading just like the fairy tale that it's mimicking. Any child that's familiar with the original will enjoy reading The Three Billy Goats Fluff. Recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Tortoise vs. Hare - The Rematch! by Preston Rutt and Ben Redlich flips a well-known story on its head, whilst Me and You by Anthony Browne approaches Goldilocks from a different angle. If you want fairy tales in their original form, then My Favourite Fairy Tales by Tony Ross is a great choice, and Aesop's Fables by Aesop, Fiona Waters and Fulvio Testa is also a great compendium. Dave by Sue Hendra also features illustrations by Liz Pichon, and is hilarious.
