What would you do if you were sent on a trip?
Would you step with trepidation, or a hop and a skip?
The land of Dr Seuss is a wonderful place,
So why not shove one of his classic books into your face?
Oh, The Places You'll Go is the classic Dr Seuss tale of one man's journey through a bizarre land. The book takes you on a trip into the imagination of an author who was never shy of the bizarre. You will sail high into the sky in a hot air balloon and walk through strange forests with trees that you have never seen. One thing is for sure, this will not be a dull outing and if you are new to Dr Seuss, one you may never forget.
The very best of Seuss was always able to inspire joy in a reader, whilst rarely making a lick of sense. Oh is a simple story that basically takes a character on a road trip. This does mean that there is no real direction to the book, but that was not really the point of reading books by the Dr. Instead you are invited to imagine the impossible. This is classic Seuss and has the illustrational style that he was renowned for. Simple colours, but bold imagery. Part of the fun of reading his work was always trying to wrap your head around what was happening on the page and this outing does it better than most.
What makes Oh a special case even for this author is that it has some classic text. The reader is told to be strong and venture forth, not to worry about what others will say about them and instead make their own way in life. This is said of course in the usual Seussian double speak.
I grew up reading the author and remember this book well. With its bold use of colour and funny pictures it can be read to a toddler and they will be amazed by the imagery, but for me these books were perfect material for when I was emerging as a reader myself. The complex text takes some consideration and it prompts an eager 5-7 year old to ask their parent what certain things mean.
There is no doubt that Oh is one of the pinnacle books in the Dr Seuss cannon and the latest special edition respects this. The book itself comes in a study and well-made hardback, but you also get a slipcase that makes this almost a collector's edition and you may be a little worried to actually read it! That would be a real shame, as although the story can be seen as a little aimless, it is really all about enjoying the journey of life and laughing as you do so.
There have been some great reissues and special editions coming out of the House of Seuss recently including Horton and the Kwuggerbug and More Lost Stories and the lesser What Pet Should I Get?.
