100 Simple Paper Flowers is an easy-to-follow guide to creating impressive floral artworks that could almost be mistaken for the real thing. Whether it is a craft project, something to brighten up a room, or a full-on display for a big event, the book has plenty of styles and designs to fit the occasion. And unlike real flowers, your paper creations will never die.
I should point out that the book is aimed at serious craft enthusiasts and shouldn't be mistaken for a children's book, although older children and teenagers may enjoy trying out some of the projects. Some of the techniques require some skill, and include use of bleach, dye, wire and hot glue.
Interestingly, the first section in the book is a beautiful full-colour gallery of all of the completed flowers. This gives the reader an idea of what the finished product will look like and may inspire them to think about what combinations of flowers will work well together. Browse through the pages and you are sure to find something that catches your eye or suits your particular mood or taste. The next part is putting it all together and creating one for yourself...
Everything needed for the creation of the flowers can be found in the second half of the book. We are given a useful guide to the equipment that will be needed before starting, as well as a list of essential and optional materials and tools. We then learn about the various techniques used to make the flowers, including creating centres, dyeing paper, covering wire and attaching leaves. All of the templates needed for the flowers are at the very back of the book and the detailed explanations are there to guide you through every step of the creation process.
For the more advanced craft enthusiast, there are some more complex craft projects, such as creating a bouquet, flower chain and hair band, which would all look lovely at a wedding or special event.
100 Simple Paper Flowers is a beautiful and inspiring book and the author has gone to create trouble to describe the projects in as much detail as possible. Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy.
