It’s Mungo Monkey’s birthday which means…Party Time! From baking a cake to blowing up balloons, he’s so excited to get things organised and ready for when his friends arrive.
This is a nice, familiar story that every child will understand. It’s not a tale where things go wrong or there’s any kind of disaster or great mischief. Instead, a nice little monkey has a nice party. And everyone has a good time. Lovely.
This is a lift the flap book and boy, are there a lot of flaps to lift with at least one on every page. For the most part these are great, with fun surprises hiding underneath. I especially liked the fancy pass the parcel one which kept going and going, just like the game.
However there are a couple where the design isn’t great, they’re too near the centre fold and if you don’t hold the flap firmly back down, it gets bent as you turn the page. This seemed such a shame in an otherwise charming book, because it is one you could read again and again, but it looks like it would quickly get tatty and lose a little something.
Other than that, I adored this book. The story is, as I said, simple, but it’s pleasant and a bit exciting because there’s a party! It’s wholesome, timeless fun which means this book could last through several siblings and their parties for years to come: after all, musical statues, cake and dressing up never go out of style.
Highly recommended, I would simply suggest care givers try to be in charge of the flap lifting as much as possible to keep it in tip top condition.
Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book.
Scaredy Squirrel has a Birthday Party by Melanie Watt isn't as simple a party, but is fun nonetheless.
