Henry is having a nice cup of tea when he is rudely interrupted by an uninvited guest. He is not at all happy when his surprise visitor decides to stay and, worse still, follow him around all day. Henry gets annoyed and pointedly ignores the little creature. However he is so involved in being irritated he doesn't notice something and the something is a big and dangerous bear. Will Henry notice in time or not?
This debut picture book by Megan Brewis was a hit with the nursery class that I shared it with because the repeated refrain encouraged them to join in. It also worked well as they enjoyed being one step ahead of Henry and spotting the bear before he did. In addition to being a jolly story it also has a lovely message about tolerance and patience pitched at a level that works well with this age group. Some of them suggested that far from being a nuisance little Boo simply wanted to make friends and all the children enjoyed the ending. For very young children a small character getting the better of a big and scary one is something that causes laughter and satisfaction. Several of them left the library practising saying 'Boo' to good effect!
The overall look of the book is appealing too and the subtle illustrations match the gentle tone of the story very well. This is a welcome addition to the library shelves.
Thank you to the publishers, Child's Play (International) Ltd for supplying this review copy.
Another lovely picture book about a friendship that gets off to a rocky start is Momo and Snap are not Friends by Airlie Anderson.
