Jenny and Isla were focused teenagers. So much so in fact that they decided to write a life plan for their futures right down to predicting the year in which Jenny would marry the man of her dreams. As luck would have it, as the predicted year arrives Jenny finds herself living with Chris – kind, dependable Chris. The sort of guy with whom she would happily walk down the aisle. Then that fateful long girly weekend with Isla happens in Vegas. A cocktail or two and voila, a sudden, very different husband. Can Jenny get a divorce in time for her wedding to Chris without Chris finding out about this little…errr... glitch? Jenny's working on it! writes with the panache with which all we fans love to luxuriate in. Here Melissa takes a normal everyday relationship we all either know, remember or see around us, tweaking it to upend any thoughts of normality.
Jenny is happy enough with Chris. He has his mates and he loves a night in front of the telly which Jenny finds comfy. This is her soulmate, unlike the mercurial Vegas-husband Jackson. Jackson is more cowboy than dependable professional and very persistent… very, very persistent.
Jenny's dilemma is our delight as our heroine agrees to a pact in order to rid herself of the cowboy which we watch turn into a logistics nightmare. There are times when this love story is possessed by the spirit of French farce in a coffee-choking, giggle-exploding good way. Jenny has to basically keep both men happy and both men separate. The first would be difficult on its own but then when you add the second…
Yet along with the laughter there are some tear-jerking revelations. I won't give anything away – a hard promise to make. Why? These are twists that you're going to be itching to discuss with someone.
The message in Melissa's story is to be careful for what you wish. The feeling rising from it is warm, extremely rewarding cosy-night-in reading peopled with characters that ring true. This includes one brash, pushy American guy that we aren't going to forget easily… nor, I'm betting, would we want to.
(Thank you, Penguin, for providing us with a copy for review.)
