Wow! Susanna's off to London. Her meteoric rise in the fashion world is continuing apace, and Teen Scene have sent her off to the UK office to spend the summer looking for a scoop. Not bad for someone who hasn't even started college yet, eh? She's billeted in a pub in a small Kent village, though, so it's not quite the cosmopolitan high life she'd imagined. But the metropolis is just a short commute away and the boy behind the counter at the local chippie is drop-dead gorgeous, so Susanna's not in the least deterred. If only she can avoid snooty Francesca, who's been sent to oversee her, things will be just fine.
You just cannot dislike these little books. They're as fresh and breezy and bright as Susanna herself. They're also utterly undemanding and over in an hour or two, but sometimes that's just what you need. And if it is, Susanna Loves London will certainly hit the spot.
Hogan manages to deliver a completely authentic air - even here, her British lingo is spot on, and she describes a London I can recognise, not the usual American fantasy - and there's always an underlying common sense to it all. Susanna is as fashion-obsessed as they come, and of course her Teen Scene adventures are preposterously unlikely, but the girl herself is utterly credible. She's sweet and funny and nice, and she's beset by the doubts and fears all teenage girls are beset by. Will I find love? How will I know if I do? What shall I do with my life? And what shoes should I wear?
Fans of Ugly Betty and The Devil Wears Prada will love Susanna. It's bubblegum fiction, absolutely undemanding, and it won't last more than an evening. But it has a heroine you root for right from page one, and it's tremendously enjoyable.
My thanks to the nice people at Simon & Schuster for sending the book.
The Devil Wears Prada crowd will also enjoy Fashionistas by Sarra Manning and also Planet Janet by Dyan Sheldon.
