Some classified ads are crying out for trolling. John Lindsay replies to them, spins them a yarn, and strings them along for as long as possible. Sometimes the advert is fairly innocuous and he emails them anyway. These are emails from an asshole, after all.
John Lindsay is the brain behind DontEvenReply.com. He's collected the best emails from his site, thrown in a few unseen ones for good measure, and provided a little background to his fun. I hope you've done the smart thing by popping over to his site and reading a couple of examples. You'll have seen just how funny they are, how immature (that's a good thing) and silly (also a good thing).
My favourite emails is the one to the woman looking for a microwave and specifying white only for the machine. Lindsay intentionally misinterprets this as I'll only buy a microwave from white people. Hilarity ensues. I also loved the kittens which he tried to get to feed to his pet tiger, and the Kons For Kids scheme. All three have a spark of evil genius that presses the buttons of the people at the other end of the conversation. They fall for it and give him (and us) just the reaction he wants.
Let's be honest: it is tempting to just read the website and be satisfied with that. Don't rule out a purchase though; it'd make a great present for those awkward twenty- and thirty-something men who you always struggle to choose for. It's also great as a toilet book (although you might end up with a numb bum if you get hooked) or for dipping into on the Tube. It is all beautifully put together, and feels like a substantial book in its own right, rather than a rehashed cash-in.
There's plenty to have you creased up with laughter in Emails From An Asshole (often bowdlerised A**hole). A certain childishness is required, but that's good! Read it to yourself. Read it to your friends. Just read it. Recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
For other excellent internet-based humour, check out I Can Has Cheezburger by Eric Nakagawa, Delete This at Your Peril: One Man's Fearless Exchanges with the Internet Spammers by Bob Servant. The Timewaster Diaries: A Year in the Life of Robin Cooper by Robin Cooper and his earlier Timewaster Letters are hilarious too.
