This is a simple, colourful picture book showing a daddy and child playing various games together, with two lines of rhyming verse on each page. It is a follow up to I Love My Mummy by the same author and illustrator duo.
It is short and sweet, a nice cosy quick read at bedtime, and our little boys really enjoy talking about the pictures. Daddy makes child pancakes, they play horsies and go to the park, and suitably at bedtime, Daddy tucks child up.
I liked the fact that Daddy is shown looking after the child on his own, but I was disappointed that they don't do many practical things together, even simple housework. When mummy's out they cuddle up on the sofa eating biscuits and looking a bit furtive as if this is a clandestine activity.
More positively, at a time when so many things even for the youngest children are very segregated as for boys or girls, this shows a child who could be either, dressed in a red t-shirt and blue trousers and other simple, practical clothes (except when dressed up as a rabbit).
I should say that our children (aged 2 and 4) like this book more than I do, not just because it's about Dad but because I really prefer books with more of a story and a little more substance to it. I would get really bored if I had to read this aloud very frequently. Also, its shortness and simplicity is sometimes welcome as our boys like to be read multiple stories at bedtime and this won't take long, but it makes the book seem a bit simplistic for our 4 year old.
Thank you very much to Orchard Books for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
Do have a look too at I Love My Mummy. Can't You Sleep, Little Bear? by Martin Waddell and Barbara Firth is a touching portrait of a father-son relationship.
