Any book of poetry that starts with Spike Milligan and ends with Roger McGough will get the thumbs up from me. Noisy Poems is full of just that: poems about sounds, with trucks honking, ducks quacking, trains clickety-clacking and shoes squeaking. It's awash with alliteration and rhythm. It's crying out to be read aloud and joined in with.
What a delightful anthology! The choice of poems is absolutely perfect. Everything flows wonderfully, allowing for casual dipping in and out, or reading cover to cover. It's an ideal introduction to the joys of poetry for the very youngest book fans, with plenty of interesting animals, machines and people, all making the noises that they make. There isn't a single weak poem in the collection, but my particular favourites were Dr Seuss' tongue-twisting Quack, Quack!, Charles Causley's delightfully surreal "Quack!" Said The Billy Goat and Roger McGough's apt conclusion of The Sound Collector.
Debi Gliori's illustrations are as bubbly and vibrant as the poems. There's plenty to pore over and enjoy, but without ever detracting from any images people might be conjuring in their own minds. The pictures blend perfectly with the words and are lots of fun.
We've been spoiled for choice with books about poetry recently. Twinkle Twinkle Chocolate Bar by John Foster is a slightly longer, but equally wonderful, set of quirky poems. A Kick In The Head: An Everyday Guide To Poetic Forms by Paul B Janeczko and Chris Raschka might sound like it would be worthy but dull, but actually it's great fun and a must-read. Favourite Nursery Rhymes by Brian Wildsmith is a must-have. Noisy Poems sits perfectly alongside all of them. Highly recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
