Yuck! Said the Yak is a great, fun book for young listeners. Alfie is trying desperately to find something which his hungry Yak friend will want to eat, but he doesn’t really think about what a Yak will want, and so all the Yak can say is Yuck!
It is a simple book which is short, making it ideal for children with a very short attention span, and the repetition of Yuck! make it one which they can join in with too, bringing their attention back should it wane at all. With it being for an age who are fairly notorious for not eating their food, they might relate very well to the Yak, though it may encourage some bad habits at the dinner table. This can be overlooked though, as it is not only a fun book to read, but also one with a nice underlying message of understanding the needs of others when they may not always be the same as your own.
Lovely, bright but simple and entertaining pictures accompany the text and make this book absolutely ideal for the market it is aimed at. They are pretty generic illustrations, but do have great humorous touches which make the Yak feel incredibly real and a great character for children to get into.
Overall, a lovely little book which I’m sure will be a popular staple in library stock before long and which should entertain kids well.
Another good book for little ones to join in with is The Animal Bop Won't Stop by Jan Ormerod and Lindsey Gardiner.
