Finally, after much anticipation, the grand finale to the best-selling Land of Stories is here. The previous book The Land of Stories: An Author's Odyssey left us dangling on an almighty cliffhanger, as well as leaving many plot threads unresolved. We have been with the Bailey twins from the very beginning; seen them grow and mature from awkward pre-teens to confident young adults. Orson Welles famously said: If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story. Is the fact that the book begins with this quote an ominous warning that the Bailey twins may not get their 'happily ever after' after all?
In this final book, the fairy tale world and our world are on a collision course and a bridge between worlds is set to appear in New York City. Of course, there are several rather nasty characters who seek to use this knowledge to their advantage. After all, a world without magic is surely ripe for the conquering. The Queen of Hearts, Captain Hook and Wicked Witch of the West have teamed up with their vast literary army, poised to invade as soon as the bridge appears. Another villain, the witch Morina, is waiting in the wings with her own witch army, and an agenda of her own. The villains have an extremely powerful weapon which may prove to be unstoppable. On the other hand, Conner has created his own army; a mixture of literary heroes and characters from his own stories. When the two sides clash, the effect will be explosive.
As well as the main story, we get to see the resolution of some of the side-stories and plot threads. Will Froggy escape the mirror curse? Will Trollbella ever find true love? Will Rook or Arthur win the battle for Alex's heart? Colfer manages to deftly tie everything up together nice and neatly, which is a great relief after all of those cliffhangers in the previous books!
Having invested many reading-hours into these books over the past couple of years, I did feel quite emotional saying goodbye to these characters, who feel like old friends. The ending is well done and gives our heroes an appropriate send off, even if Colfer can't resist leaving the tiniest cliffhanger at the very end in typical fashion!
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending this series to Bookbag for review. I have loved reading the stories as much as my children have and wish Chris Colfer every success with his future writing projects and hope that they include a return to children's fiction at some point.
Readers really do need to start at the beginning if they want to get the most out of the series, as there are a lot of plot threads and secondary characters. Therefore we recommend starting with The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell which sees our heroes transported to the Land of Stories for the very first time.
