Simon Barnes had his first taste of beer in 1976 when he was just six years old. Over the years it would become a habit and then a need. By 2016 and with a wife and child of his own he was a functioning alcoholic - a fact known by everybody except Simon. He's concentrating on wanting another child to complete his family. His wife, Daisy, isn't worried. They took a long time to conceive Millie, who's perfect in every way, so why tempt fate? Simon's not inclined to let matters rest though and it's at a fertility clinic that he receives the news that will change all their lives: he's sterile.

It was inevitable that Simon would have doubts about Millie's parentage, much as he adored the child. It was Daisy he had doubts about and he coped with his doubts by drinking even more. At a party given by the couple's best friends everything spiralled horribly out of control.

I'm not going to tell you any more about the plot than that - you really should have the pleasure of allowing it to unwind from the page as Adele Parks intends that you should read it. Suffice it to say that as soon as you think that you have it sorted in your own mind and you know where this is going, you'll find that everything changes and you've got to rearrange all your thinking. I didn't know what really happened on that fateful night until the final page.

It's even difficult to tell you much about the characters apart from the fact that they're brilliantly drawn, as you might believe what you're told, but you'll have a niggling doubt in the back of your mind that you've not been told the whole truth, that there's an ulterior motive behind what you've read. The only character I found to be completely straightforward was Millie. We're with her between the ages of six and nine and she goes through some dreadful times, but there's no guile in her. I loved that.

Lies Lies Lies is not a book you can pick up and put down. It's a book you'll start reading and be unable to put down because you need to know what happens next. I finished it in a little over twenty-four hours and resented every minute I had to spend away from the characters. Amazingly this is the first Adele Parks book I've read, but it certainly won't be the last and fortunately there's a more than decent back catalogue to investigate. I'd like to thank the publishers for making a copy available to the Bookbag.

If Lies Lies Lies appeals then you might also enjoy In Her Eyes by Sarah Alderson.
