The second book in Justine Avery's Wonders series is the perfect antidote to long summer days with bored children - or, indeed, as we've found recently, for those long lockdown days when an awful pandemic is rolling across the world. What do you do when every book has been read and every toy has been played with, repurposed, and played with again?
Why, go outside of course!
Outside can be your back garden, the local park, some nearby woods - anywhere really, because there will always be wonders to discover. If you use your ears and...
Listen to the birds, the breeze. The rustle of the leaves so excited All of nature is calling. We've been invited!
And don't just stare ahead. Take your time.
Be sure to look down. What's happening below? Beneath our feet These are the tiniest creatures to get to know.
And if there's down... there's also up!
The What Wonders Do You See... When You Dream? by Justine Avery and Liuba Syrotiukfirst book in her aptly named Wonders series took us through the worlds we can inhabit in our dreams and this time she turns her hand to the real world. This bright, engaging rhymed story takes children on a simple trip to the outdoors. It encourages them to use all their senses to find new discoveries and experiences. Look down at the insects on the ground. Look up to the birds and the clouds in the sky. Listen, really, listen to nature. It's as cheerful as we've come to expect from Justine Avery, who has a sunny attitude to the world and all its wonders and which she wants to share with children and her slightly idiosyncratic approach to rhyme makes it fun to read.
The illustrations by Libua Syrotiuk are as bright and optimistic as the text, full of vibrant colours and happy faces and with so much clever detail worked into the overall scenes, the book will bear plenty of re-readings with something new to find in each. This marries perfectly with one of the book's central messages to its young readers: slow down, take the time to really explore and you will be rewarded with hidden treasures.
What Wonders Await Outdoors is a lovely story to be saved for times when they're bored and you're tearing your hair out. This one's particularly for any child with an interest in the natural world.
If you haven't seen the What Wonders Do You See... When You Dream? by Justine Avery and Liuba Syrotiukfirst book in this series, then you should. It's all about the imaginative world of dreams. If they enjoy some humour in their picture books, they might like an entirely different story about an adventure outside in Stick Man by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
