Summary: In this excellent book from Jerome Keane and Susana de Dios, Fox and Horse are bored. Really bored. That is, until the egg comes along and they are forced to learn how to share. Will they manage it? A brilliant story for all the family. | |

Horse and Fox are really bored. Nothing had happened for ages, until the egg arrived. In this lovely book, they are forced to try and share, but they aren't particularly good at it. I really love the style of this book, it uses bold, different colour schemes to make it instantly eye catching and engaging. The text has an immediately obvious sense of humour whilst still managing to be simple enough for early readers to grasp.
I particularly enjoy the first few pages in which very little happens, because it builds up the story incredibly well. The way the pages repeat lines mirrors a learner reader book, which increases the humour as well as working to highlight the very modern style of the illustrations. The way the background is quite bleak brings the two main characters very much into focus, making them particularly engaging and entertaining right from the first page.
There is a good underlying moral to the book, encouraging sharing, which it imparts without becoming preachy or annoying. I think parents of more than one young child or teachers of young children will enjoy reading this book together with the whole family or class, as it is a universal story which should entertain everyone as they recognise the issues sharing brings up amongst children. I very much hope Horse and Fox return to explore some other issues with us, and look forward to seeing what they are if they do!
Overall, I think this is a greatly entertaining story with appealing characters which will go down well with families everywhere.
If you like this, then I think Ernest by Catherine Rayner, the story of a big Moose trying to fit into a small book, will be right up your street. You might also enjoy The Zoo Crew Play Ball by Judy Bee and Little Pink Pebble.
