Christopher Nibble and all the other guinea pigs in Dandeville love eating dandelions. They munch them morning, noon and night. When they run out, they're faced with the prospect of having to make do with cabbage instead, but Christopher Nibble spots the very last dandelion. He tends to it, until its seeds are ready to be spread all over Dandeville.
There's something particularly charming about Christopher Nibble. It's a gentle tale about an unlikely hero, who just quietly gets on with helping everyone without any fuss. Virtue is its own reward - well, that and lots of dandelions to eat. Although it might sound like a twee, traditional book, it's anything but: its gentle tone is perfectly offset by a fresh and modern style.
Charlotte Middleton's illustrations are simple but effective. Look at that front cover and tell me you don't love Christopher already! She uses photos of dandelions in a collage along with drawings of Christopher and his family. It really suits the tone of the book. The text is woven amongst the pictures, which draws you in to every page. There are also plenty of little comic touches dotted around, which makes it great fun for delving into.
It's a perfect book for any young children who love guinea pigs, rabbits and similar animals, or who love pottering in the garden helping mummy or daddy with the weeding. Beyond them, it's also great for any child: Christopher is such a sweet character that he'll strike a chord with anyone. Recommended.
It may not have guinea pigs, but Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld mixes humour and small animals to great effect. Young families who like engaging with nature will enjoy Blueberry Girl by Neil Gaiman.
