Summary: Everybody pees! Potty training isn't always joyous as any parent can tell you, but this funny and encouraging little picture book can help things along by both normalising bodily functions and making everybody laugh with a bit of good, old-fashioned lavatory humour. | |

Can potty training ever be joyous? It often isn't, as any parent will tell you. But really, why shouldn't it be? We all have to learn about our bodily functions just as we have to learn about everything else when we are small. Why shouldn't potty training be as much fun as, say, learning about why the sun and the moon take turns in the sky?
Justine Avery sets about trying to make potty training fun in this sweet little book, aided and abetted heroically by illustrator Naday Meldova. The central message, as the title points out, is that everybody pees. And not just everybody, but *every body*. Just as you pee, your mum pees, your grandad pees. Just as your family pees, doctors pee and pilots pee and even the president pees. Just as humans pee, monkeys pee (up a tree) and moles pee (underground).
Every body pees! Of course, this is a reassuring message for the littlest of little ones who are just beginning to learn that there's a reason mum keeps changing your nappy and that you are going to have to start dealing with that reason by yourself. It's nothing to worry about. But Everybody Pees! has a longer shelf life than that. Most children find lavatory humour irresistible (some of us ancient crones still like it too, but perhaps I shouldn't admit to that) and Meldova's illustrations provide plenty of giggles. I particularly liked grandad sitting on the loo with his paper, the cat nonchalantly perching on a litter tray without a care in the world, and the mountaineer, celebrating reaching the summit in an um... very pee-tastic way! The text is rhythmic and easy to read aloud with a gentle repetition of the central message and the book ends on an affirmative note with a child on the potty and a parent saying I'm so proud of you!
Everybody Pees! is another offering from Justine Avery that combines a positive message and attitude to parenting with some sweet and funny humour. A light and non-didactic touch is the hallmark of all her books and it's what makes them so successful. Perhaps potty training can be joyous after all!
Recommended.
