Wobble Bear is a delightful little bear who is just starting to learn about colours. He insists through the book on calling everything 'yellow', whether it is or not, much to his mummy's frustration and my daughter's delight!
This is a charming board book all about colours. Wobble's mummy tells him the different colours of things around the house as she gets him ready for bed, repeating the colour names in an attempt to get Wobble to copy her. Wobble, however, has a different idea and he insists throughout on saying everything is 'yellow'! He does this right from the start of the book, with a cheeky little smile on his face and a look directly at the reader, so children instantly realise that Wobble is being funny. Just three pages in to reading this aloud at our play group's story time saw almost all the children shouting out 'yellow' along with Wobble!
It rhymes nicely, with a good tempo and rhythmic lead up to each shout of 'yellow', and it worked very well as a snack time story for a mixed group of babies and toddlers. The illustrations are lovely too, very clear and simple and the bears are charming. The drawings are not too busy, and so don't interrupt the flow of the story. It's short enough to work as a story for book-loving babies, and funny enough to keep older toddlers entertained with all the joining in.
It reminded me, as a mum, of my own frustrations with my daughter who insisted for quite some time on using the wrong names for colours until I finally gave up trying to teach her, convinced that she would never figure it out! (Of course, once I stopped going on about it she miraculously used the right colour name for everything!) Anyway, it's a lovely, enjoyable story and one which, most importantly, I won't mind reading over, and over, and over again!
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
