Nell's Kydd's father died in a hunting accident and her brother, Kit was uncontactable, seemingly lost, on his way back from India. This left her uncle, Jasper Kydd in charge of the family estate and he appeared to be doing all in his power to wreck Kydd Court and make Nell's life a misery. Her mother coped with it all by retreating into her own world, where she couldn't be reached either. When an unwelcome offer of marriage is forced upon her, Nell knows that she has to take action and that's when the very unsettling Captain Hugo Derringer arrives. He's an old friend of Kitt's, but what exactly is he doing in the area and can Nell trust him?
It's a splendid Regency romp with a heroine you will love for her acerbic tongue, kind heart and her no-messing attitude, be it bulls, uncles or Captains who are in the firing line. In Jasper Kydd there's a villain you can happily boo and who leaves little room for doubt about his intentions. But what of Hugo Derringer? Nell is obviously smitten, but having turned down one proposal of marriage what's she to make of the Captain, with his green eyes and warming smile?
It's a splendid chase, some of it (perish the thought) unchaperoned, through London and the Home Counties with a little bit of cross-dressing thrown in for good measure. You'll wonder what Nell will get up to next and you'll be on the edge of your seat as Jasper Kydd tries to wreak his final vengeance on Kydd Court.
It's a quick and engaging read. I read it in one sitting so keen was I to find out how it all worked out, and just when I thought it was all going to work out very satisfactorily there was another twist in the tale and I was back on the edge of the seat. It's a good romance with some real tension to keep you reading to the final page.
