Mary Had A Little Lamb is a much-loved nursery rhyme. We all know the story of its fleece as white as snow, and that it followed Mary to school one day. Kate Willis-Crowley takes the nursery rhyme, and presents it in its purest form. There's no twist, no unusual rewriting, it's simply the sweet rhyme of a girl and her lamb that is familiar to all.
Is it worth purchasing, then, over a collection of nursery rhymes? It's a resounding yes from me. The illustrations are gorgeous - gentle and loving. The classic rhyme is allowed the space to stand alone. The optional activity at the end is, I'm assuming, a nod to copyright, but it's a fun additional extra. Classics are classics for a reason, and every young child will adore Mary Had A Little Lamb.
Mary Had A Little Lamb would make for a particularly delightful present, particularly from a grandparent, or anyone with more traditional leanings. Every child needs nursery rhymes. Every child needs to know the famous stories, to get all the references and jokes that will pepper literature and other culture. It's very easy to embrace the quirky, but sometimes you need to pare everything back and stick to the originals. Mary Had A Little Lamb does exactly that.
Warmly recommended.
The Orchard Book Of Nursery Rhymes For Your Baby by Penny Dann and Favourite Nursery Rhymes by Brian Wildsmith are also fantastic additions to any child's bookshelf. For other lamb-based fun, take a look at Wolf's Magnificent Master Plan by Melanie Williamson and Where Are My Lambs? by Francesca Simon and Emily Bolam.
