Lotta is enjoying the holiday of a lifetime: a Christmas family get-together with her Mormor, Morfar and Oldeforelde in Norway. Nestled cosily by the fireside, watching the candles flickering on the Christmas tree, Lotta cuddles up to her beloved Great-Grandmother and listens to her fascinating stories of life as a reindeer-herder. Lotta loves the stories and can almost imagine herself there. Almost...

Then, one night Lotta wakes up to find herself in an unfamiliar place, dressed in strange clothes. It would seem that she has been magically transported, Quantum Leap style, into the heart of one of her Great-Grandmother tales. For now, at least, Lotta is part of the Sami, helping to herd a large group of reindeer to the birthing-grounds. The route is treacherous and fraught with danger, especially for one special reindeer, Flower, who has just given birth to a calf en route. Lotta and Erika must do all that they can to help the young calf survive the harsh winter.

The Reindeer Girl is another example of Webb doing what she does best: writing engaging animal stories that touch the heart. She has done plenty of research to make the account sound authentic and has even added some extra facts at the end of the book about the Sami and their way of life. The journey of the Sami seemed an unusual subject for a children’s story, but the book is full of excitement, adventure, warmth and tender moments. The relationship between the two girls is believable and touching and I really cared about what happened to them and the baby reindeer.

The book has a great twist at the end, which allows the reader to interpret the story any way they wish. Was Lotta dreaming, or did she really travel back in time? The Reindeer Girl is the perfect book to read by the fire on a cold, snowy day and would make an ideal gift for any child who loves animals.

Another perfect wintery tale for animal lovers is The Christmas Unicorn by Anna Currey
