A group of ants decide to drill through their tree stump in order to give themselves a window to the outside world. The more they drill, the more colours they find, and the more whacky and wild ideas they come up with for what they mind find outside the safety of their home.

Everything about this book is satisfying, from the just right in-between size, to the bright blocks of colour, to the way the story progresses from a small, dull start into a bright, over the top ending.

I love the way that the colours build up with each page, each hole seeming to let in more and more light to the story itself. The way the story is written, entirely in dialogue, means that it lends itself nicely to a more elaborate reading style, maybe not suited so much to a quiet bedtime routine. This isn’t a bad thing at all though, to me it’s a great thing. It’s great to have a book that you can savour, stretch out, and make your own, and finding a way to get kids interacting with books is wonderful.

I think this book will appeal to a wide range of readers, bright bold colours being well suited to younger children who are just getting to grips with colours, and the story itself being well suited to older children who like to use their imaginations alongside the story being read to them.

If you like this, you could give an old classic a pop up twist by trying The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pop-Up Book by Eric Carle.
