Sophie's cousin Dani has never been particularly stable, but Sophie never expected her to commit suicide. When she finds a memory stick in Dani's jeans which suggests that there may have been rather more to her death than there seemed, she does the sensible thing and goes to the police. The police don't seem particularly bothered, though, so Sophie and her friend Reece decide to investigate for themselves - only to find they may be in over their heads. Can they expose the people who caused Dani's death, or will they have enough trouble avoiding becoming victims themselves?
Alternating between Sophie and Reece's point of view, this is an entertaining combination of action and romance. The two main characters have strong voices and are pretty well-developed, with an interesting relationship which starts out as them trying to rebuild a friendship which had turned sour and then sees them having to work out exactly how they feel about each other.
The supporting cast isn't quite as well-rounded, although it's refreshingly hard to work out who the villains are for much of the book - it's a cleverly plotted book which will have readers guessing because of the twists and the turns. That said, the ending is just a little bit too much of a cop-out to make it truly fantastic. The addition of a potential romance to the excitement will possibly split readers - I think Blaxill does a good job of making it so that it's important to the plot but never overshadows the life and death stakes.
Overall, though, this is a fast-paced book that's a quick and easy read and definitely has me interested in reading more by Gina Blaxill. Recommended for thriller fans.
For another exciting read, I enjoyed Dark Eyes by William Richter.
