Summary: A bunch of sheep stealing an aeroplane might sound like a wacky premise for a book, but it works amazingly well...

The sheep on the hillside live a pretty sedate lifestyle, grazing on green grass day after day. One morning they hear a mighty ZOOM overhead and go to check out where the noise is coming from. To their delight, they see rows of aeroplanes lined up in the field below, ready for a race. The inquisitive sheep decide to hop inside a big yellow aeroplane and before they know it, they have accidentally pressed the start button and are flying high above the hills!

Those Magnificent Sheep in Their Flying Machine is a funny story which follows the adventures of the sheep as they travel the world. The narrative is written in rhyme, which will particularly appeal to its young target audience.

The illustrations are amusing and sure to raise a giggle from young readers. The sheep all have different personalities and I particularly liked Ben, the cheeky little black lamb with the huge, expressive eyes. Their adventures take them to many places, including France, where they can-can in their underpants; Spain, where they are chased by a bull; Egypt, where they meet some scary mummies and Tibet, where Ben munches on a spaghetti-yeti!

The story ultimately has the moral that there is no place like home and suffice to say that the wandering sheep soon get tired of their global adventure and start to crave life on the hillside once more.

This is a lovely book for sharing, with charming characters and lots of comedy. Kids will be so busy laughing that they won’t realise that the book is also teaching them a bit of geography too...

Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy.
