Winnie the Witch and her big black cat Wilbur loved to visit the museum. It was full of fascinating things.
Winnie and Wilbur are always happy to queue up with everyone else to visit their favourite museum. There are so many things to look at and play with but best of all is the dinosaur room. Winnie is fascinated by the dinosaurs and tells Wilbur that she would love to see a real one. One time when they visit, they discover that it is actually Dinosaur Week and that there is an exciting competition to make a model or draw a picture to show what the museum's dinosaur skeleton would have looked like when it was alive.
Unfortunately, inspiration is hard to come by. Luckily, that's where a little bit of magic comes in to play and just by waving her wand and shouting 'Abracadabra', Winnie and Wilbur are transported back through the years to the time of the dinosaurs. All they have to do is find the dinosaur that will fit the skeleton and they will have something even better than a model or a drawing to enter into the competition. Will it be enough to win though and what will happen to the enormous dinosaur once the competition is over?
'Winnie's Dinosaur Day' is just one of many fabulously funny books about the amusing and eccentric Winnie and her cat Wilbur. As always, Winnie comes up with a madcap idea and Wilbur is more than a little sceptical. However, everything always turns out all right for the pair of them in the end. It's a delightfully comical story and is one that will appeal to children who are fascinated by dinosaurs as well as all the many Winnie fans that already love this series of books.
The story is written quite simply with not too many words on any page which makes it ideal for young children who are just starting to read on their own. It's also a very good book for sharing especially as there are bits that little ones will want to join in with. For example, every time that Winnie waves her magic wand and shouts 'Abracadabra', this word appears in larger letters and in a different font. This happens quite a few times throughout the story. My daughter always likes to read (or shout) this bit herself, even if she has chosen to listen to the rest of the story.
Korky Paul has provided the illustrations which he does for all of the Winnie the Witch books. These are all very funny and very busy so there is lots to take in on every page. We also like the way that not only does he include the same characters from the previous Winnie books, but if you look carefully you will also spot some characters from other stories that he has illustrated too. His depictions of Winnie are brilliant all the way down from her slightly skew-whiff witch's hat to her striped tights and dangerously sharp looking pointy boots.
Reading about Winnie is like reading about an old friend. We always enjoy her antics and although there are similarities in all the books, every story is refreshingly different. This is definitely another book to add to our ever growing Winnie the Witch collection.
