Summary: This book was such a favourite with my older children and we share so many happy memories of it that I cannot be objective. I can only hope the dim-witted Pugwash and his idle crew will give as much delight to a new generation of children and their parents. | |

Captain Pugwash was first published in 1957. It was a comic strip, a TV animation and the story series developed into a further twenty four titles. Pugwash is conceited, stupid, podgy, unshaven and lovable. His crew are the laziest afloat, his enemy, Cut-Throat Jake, is satisfyingly villainous and cabin-boy Tom can always be relied on to save the day. Many families will remember these as childhood favourites whether in print or on the screen.
In this first adventure we are introduced to the main character and Pugwash is, as ever, fooled by Cut-throat Jake and rescued by Tom. And as usual he takes all the credit. The main reason to love Pugwash is the charm and good-humour of John Ryan's illustrations but they are also good fun to read aloud, especially if you enjoy putting on voices. Children who are reading independently will be unobtrusively helped increase their vocabulary and confidence by the clarity with whch the pictures mirror the story. This is the grand-daddy of all pirate stories for yong children. Every family should have a copy.
They should also, of course, possess Peter Pan and Wendy and I have found that Sir Charlie Stinky Socks: the Pirate's Curse by Kristina Stephenson is a grandchild-pleaser.
