Don Challenor is a down on his luck estate agent who gets tasked to sell a house in Cornwall and upon meeting the live-in cleaner, Blake, finds his life utterly turned upside down. A simple sales job gets increasingly complex with the addition of a witch, professional heavies and a mysterious panic room. Intrigue builds on intrigue and what started fairly simply becomes something far more complex.

I'll get my only bugbear with this book out of the way first – the name of one of the major characters. 'Jack Harkness' is a name very well known in Doctor Who and Torchwood fandom and for me the use of it in this book kept conjuring up inappropriate images of John Barrowman (although to be honest they are the only type of image possible with him). That out the way lets tackle the book.

Goddard masterfully creates characters that leap off the page and are as real as any in fiction. The clever shifting narrative should be annoying but instead serves to give us a changing perspective that keeps the narrative flowing. The chapters countdown to an unknown event as we progress into the murkier and murkier waters of the tale and the final reveal comes out of left field and is terrifying.

I loved this book and took far too long reading it as I savoured the familiar surroundings and really liked many of the characters. The huge plot points from the beginning of the book become petty in comparison with the true reveals made by the end and we are slowly drawn into a world that is far more complicated than we realise. I strongly recommend that you give this book a read as you won't regret it.

Further reading I recommend Nemesis by Jo Nesbo and Don Bartlett (translator).
