After the demon attack on the Tabernacle, Riley Blackthorne has got a lot to think about. Her (dead) Father turned up to warn her about the impending attack, but just made him and Riley look guilty in the process. Riley doesn't care about that, she wants to know who reanimated her Father and stole his body. Her bet is on Ozymandias, the creepiest of all the necromancers – plus she did tick him off.
Next, there's Simon. He nearly died in the attack and Riley had to make a deal with an Angel to save his life. He suspects that Riley is on Hell's side, and he wants to know how she managed to survive. Ori's still hanging around, he's made himself Riley's bodyguard, shadowing her wherever she goes. Even though Riley knows she should be concentrating on winning Simon over, her thoughts keep drifting to Ori. On top of all this she has to put up with Beck's criticism and pressure.
But things are about to get much worse for Riley as the brutal Demon Hunters from Rome arrive in Atlanta to take over. They've got a few questions for Riley. Like Simon they think that the attack and the rise is demon levels are all because of Riley.
This is a good sequel to The Demon Trappers: Forsaken. It starts right where the first book left off in the aftermath of the attack on the Tabernacle. In places, the plot started to get a bit too complicated for me. There are lots of threads to this story, and about half way through the book it just got too much: in particular, Riley's relationship with her friend Peter while he's dealing with the divorce of his parents. I just felt that there where already three predominant males in Riley's life (Beck, Simon and Ori) and with the introduction of others like Mort, it was just too much.
I would recommend this book if you enjoyed the first in the series and I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
Further reading suggestion: Obviously you should read the first books The Demon Trappers: Forsaken – unlike some series this book does not work as a stand alone piece, the plot would just be too confusing if you jumped into the series here. Maggie Stiefvater books are a must if you enjoy this type if thing, try Ballad.
