They don't know who we are. Not really. They don't know what we've done, what we've managed together… so let's show them they picked the wrong damn fight.

First things first if you haven't read Six of Crows yet, the first book in the duology, you should read it as soon as possible, buy it or borrow it before anything else and then read Crooked Kingdom. Trust me, because while Six of Crows is unimaginably clever, with diverse characters and a brilliant heist plot, Crooked Kingdom is on a whole other level.

The story resumes a week after the events of Six of Crows, where Kaz Brekker and his Ketterdam crew have just accomplished the impossible – they've pulled off the most daring heist their world has ever seen. But it has come at a cost. Betrayed by their benefactor van Eck, the crew are lacking resources and missing one of their own. But, they will not be beaten. Going up against one of the most powerful men in Kerch as well as his allies, and with their city turning against them, the stage is set for a daunting rescue mission in which they will have to defy all odds to escape with their lives. Wanted and on the run, Kaz and his crew will also have to orchestrate the most intelligent revenge plot to secure their freedom. The plan: destroy van Eck's reputation. The aim: to show the world that only fools cross Kaz Brekker.

This book is something special. I was worried that Crooked Kingdom wouldn't match up to Six of Crows but thankfully I had no need to fear. Leigh Bardugo has written a fast-paced novel that is breath-taking, with an incredibly clever plot and wonderful characters. The plot is masterfully constructed and constantly surprises the reader as plans change all the time. It's nail-biting and dark, but there are also many lovely moments between the characters that make the book exceptional.

It is of course the characters who make the novel so great and I especially enjoyed reading from all of the characters' points of view, which opened up some of their backstories for the first time while expanding on others. It was great to learn more about them and readers can really relate to the characters, all of whom have suffered greatly in the past and are trying to make the future their own. Another great thing about Crooked Kingdom is the beautiful world-building. The Grisha universe is enchanting and the author brings the story to life on the streets of Ketterdam. So much so I really didn't want to leave and I hope that this is not the last series set in Leigh Bardugo's magical world.

A perfect conclusion to the Six of Crows duology, Crooked Kingdom is a rollercoaster of emotions and worth its weight in gold. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Special thanks to the publishers for sending us a beautiful copy to review!

If you loved Leigh Bardugo's epic duology and want more fast paced action and adventure, The Call by Peadar o Guilin is a thrilling read with great characters.
