I think there's a lot to be said for children knowing classic fairy tales because they are the foundation for a lot of stories and literature in later life. They are referred to as classic for a reason, and this is a great way to introduce your child to the world of Kings, Queens, enchanted creatures and wicked spells!

Rumpelstiltskin is the tale of a miller who is so proud of his daughter that he lies to his friend and says that she can spin straw into gold. The king overhears this story but doesn’t believe it and so orders the miller to bring his daughter to him, he imprisons her and says she must spin the straw he has left for her into gold. Distraught, she sits in the room alone and cries. Just then, a creature appears and offers her help. But what happens next and what does the creature want in return for his help?
This is a lovely retelling of the story, and the flaps make it all the more interesting for readers. It has a high ratio of words to a page and so might make a good bed time book for a parent to read or a good story to start with for a more confident school aged reader. The creature is pretty scary and I think when he appears from behind some of the flaps children will genuinely be scared about what is going to happen next.
Even if you already know this particular tale, it is a book worth reading. It is told very accessibly using simple language and to the point illustrations and so refreshes the story for a new generation of children to read and love in the future.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
If you liked this then you could try another classic story from the same series, such as The Little Mermaid by Laura Barella, or maybe even an entire book of fairy tales in The Orchard Book Of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales by Martin Waddell and Emma Chichester Clark.
