Belle and David's twin daughters are just coming to the end of their first term at university. Kit's been at Bristol and Jess's in Exeter. It's not only the first time they've been away from their parents for any length of time - but they've also been apart from each other. Belle can't wait to have them all to herself for a while. Then Kit rings up - can she bring her boyfriend home with her? Belle would prefer that he didn't come but doesn't want to upset Kit. Ivo's apparently 'older': he's twenty-four to Kit's eighteen but Belle figures that she can cope with that. And they'll be sharing a bedroom.

It seems OK to start with: Kit's obviously besotted with Ivo and the whole family is noisily aware of their sex life although, thankfully, not Morag, the twins' grandmother, who lives in the basement flat. What worries Belle is that Ivo seems to know too much about her and sometimes he even calls her 'Bella' and no one's called her that since... Well, yes since Then. David doesn't know about what happened and the twins hadn't even been born then. Belle would prefer that it stays that way. It's becoming increasingly obvious that Ivo has other ideas.
Sometimes you pick up a book and it won't let go. It clings to you and you just have to make the time to find out what happens. I really don't want to tell you too much about the plot because you should really read it for yourself - but it is exquisite. I really couldn't see how it was all going to work out until we got to the final pages and then everything was resolved most satisfactorily. Of course, it helps that the characterisation is brilliant. Belle's not perfect but she's human and you really want everything to work out for her. I didn't really warm to Kit until I remembered that I'd been eighteen once and there were certain similarities! Ivo - well, you're going to have to read the book to find out about Ivo.
The story's set in Southwold and Walberswick. Belle's a fan of wild swimming (we used to call it 'going for a dip in the sea') and she swims throughout the year. I shivered along with her but such is the quality of Jacqueline Sutherland's writing, that I actually thought that I might like to try it... This is a cracking book and highly recommended.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
