Jane Ray has taken the classic fairy tale of Snow White, the dwarves and the wicked queen, and created beautiful three-dimensional tableaux. It's a much-loved story that everyone is familiar with, and this is a great opportunity to rediscover a classic in an interesting new way.

There are six double page spreads in Snow White, each creating the feeling of a theatre scene. It's somewhere between a pop-up book and a diorama, and every page cries out to be investigated, looking behind the trees, through the windows, and immersing yourself in Snow White's world. The illustrations have a traditional air to them, which suits the nature of the story perfectly and helps create a wonderful atmosphere. Young girls in particular will love losing themselves in dreams of princes and magic.

The story itself is written on the curtains at the edge of each scene. The pop-up scenes are the star of the show, but the text does everything you'd expect of it: it's a delightful and timeless tale which ticks all the right boxes. The vocabulary is clear and engaging, making it suitable for reading together with the youngest of book fans, or for those who have just learn to read for themselves.

It's almost a book to play with, more than to read. It's gorgeous, and would make a wonderful gift for girls of primary age. That said, it's not too twee and girly, and there's nothing that will make boys feel left out. Classic fairy tales like Snow White are always a joy to read, and this is no exception. Recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
