Tiger is not really a tiger, but a kitten. But he loves pretending to be one: snarly, scary, creeping up on everything, jumping oh so high and NOT playing with wool at all.

This picture book edition is eminently suitable for its toddler target audience: Tiger is like a toddler or a young preschooler himself; playful, explorative and full of mischief.

The pages are small and sturdy, the simple text in bold, dynamic type and the pictures elicited excited "miau miaus" from my own toddler, at the sides with the kitten as well as at the ones with the PROPER tiger.

I am not sure to what extent he realised that the little kitten in the book was pretending to be the big tiger, but it doesn't really matter: he himself enjoyed miaowing, roaring, jumping and creeping up on unsuspecting creatures and so will other little children, while the final sleepy tableau is a glorious sight indeed (especially for anybody like me, who has an unfulfilled childhood dream of owning a larger-than-life big-cat cuddly toy).

Educational opportunities include the verbs of motion and sound, the names of body parts, quite a few animals and the comparison between large and small, adult and child.

I also liked the illustrations, realistic and lifelike so I felt that both the little and the big cat were about to leap from the page, with some humour to amuse the parents and great dynamism (particularly on big tiger pages) in the depiction of movement.

Recommended for toddler book boxes everywhere, especially in this board book edition.

The review copy was sent to the Bookbag by the publisher - thank you!

If you like tigers The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerris a classic picture book for older toddlers and preschoolers. Miaow! by Mick Inkpen has a kitten with the toddler's favourite, Kipper. We've also enjoyed Posy by Linda Newbery and there's always the inimitable Dear Zoo.
