Fishy Tales by Rob Scotton
Even cats have to go to school too, y’know? And Splat is no exception. Today they’re going on a school trip to the aquarium, though, which is a bit exciting if you’re a cat, even if your teacher (the fabulously named Mrs Wimpydimple) is very clear on the ground rules: look with your eyes, not with your hands. And absolutely no eating of the fish!

This is the first time I’ve ever come across this sort of oooh, errrr romance in a pre-school children’s book, but Splat is smitten! Smitten with Kitten in fact. He’s going out of his way to impress her with important, exciting facts about the fish, except nasty Spike keeps disproving his claims with his boring, posh book of fish facts. Naughty Spike.
This is the latest in a series of books about Splat the Cat, so he’s obviously a popular character, and it’s easy to see why. He is cheeky and lively and really tries, but sometimes there are little hiccups in his adventures, which make him all the more lovable. At the same time the fact that this book is more for nursery school children than junior school ones means it’s a slightly odd subject to choose. Not the aquarium trip, which makes sense and is fun, but the emerging crush on Kitten. It just seems a smidge mature for this age group. After all, I didn’t have my first wedding until I was well into Year 4.
This aside, it is a fun book that is easy to read aloud. Splat and his friends are not especially attractive cats but kids will no doubt love them, and it’s fun to giggle at the ways cats are made more human, for example Splat with his backpack, and Kitten with the bow in her hair.
Little ones will enjoy Splat’s latest adventure, and it’s nice that it’s one of a series so if they really fall in love there are other books out there for them to enjoy.
Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book.
Love, Splat and Secret Agent Splat! are earlier adventures of the cat in question. Give them a try.
