Dragonmazia by Rolf Heimann
Dragonmazia is packed to the rafters with detailed, engaging, varied and fascinating mazes. There's a strong dragon theme throughout, without ever getting samey: there are medieval dragons, Oriental dragons, and a few cuddly dragons too. Each page generally has one big maze, with a few smaller mazes or puzzles dotted around it. It doesn't have an overall narrative, but there's plenty of detail to pore over beyond the mazes themselves.

Summary: A collection of mazes and puzzles, all with a fun dragon theme. It's perfectly done, but the lack of central narrative means it won't have as wide an audience as it deserves. | |

For what it is, Dragonmazia is perfect. Any child who loves mazes will enjoy working their way through this and Rolf Heimann's many other maze and puzzle books. The mazes are complicated enough to be challenging, but not so difficult as to be off-putting or unsolveable. I would have preferred it if there was more of a narrative woven into it, to maintain a greater level of interest throughout. Heimann's fascinating mazes deserve a wider audience than simply maze devotees.
It's unfair to judge Dragonmazia on what it isn't. It's well worth having in store for a change of pace for any child on a rainy Sunday afternoon. If it's a book to be devoured immediately, it'll require a particular type of child. If they love mazes and puzzles, then they'll have a hoot with it (even if it does feel a bit odd drawing all over a book).
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
Other great books with a dragon theme are Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Yarrow, Lenny Lipton and Eric Puybaret and Dragon Danger and Grasshopper Glue (Wizzbang Wizard) by Scoular Anderson.
