Some books are classics and they prove this by never going out of print. Do you want to pick up a copy of a Dr Seuss novel? The chances are that you will be able to find a brand new one in any book shop. However, do these tales still stand the test of time? Can Horton’s adventures with the Whos remain the wonderful story it was the day it was written?
Horton is a bit of an absent minded elephant who often finds himself getting into trouble that is not really his fault. Therefore, when he stumbles across a flower that speaks, no one will believe him. Horton can hear the Whos (who live in the flower) because of his large ears. Can our elephantine friend persuade the other animals that there is actually a species of tiny beings, before they destroy the flower?
‘‘Horton Hears a Who’’ is a stone cold classic from Dr Seuss. It has his trademark amusing rhymes, brilliant illustrations and wacky ideas, but also has a compelling story. Some of the good Doctor’s work is great fun, but is basically a list of silly ideas put onto a page, ‘‘Horton’’ is different. It is a story about believing in something and working together; Horton believes that there is a race of tiny people in a flower, but the other animals believe that he is lying – enough so that they are willing to destroy the flower. Children who read the book will not only be entertained by the rhymes, but will perhaps learn to fight what they believe in.
Many people would have already read ‘‘Horton’’ or have seen the film, so are familiar with what will happen. Therefore, at this point, buying a classic children’s book is as much about the format as it is the tale. Do you get a special edition that you will cherish, or buy a cheaper copy that is designed to be read over and over again? This new version of the book is certainly designed for use and comes in a large format paperback. There is something to cherish about reading Seuss in hardback, but with this version is well priced so you can buy several copies and share them out. If you do, you are providing a perfect introduction to a magical series of books.
