I love concept books for little kids, and this one does the genre perfectly.

''Here comes the wolf…Stop him! Quick, turn the page!''<br>
''He’s getting closer… Quick! Turn the page''

With every turn of the thick, cardboard pages, the Wolf is getting closer. Eek. Can you escape in time? Maybe if you’re clever and make him trip up on himself by tilting the pages? Might he then slide off?

You don’t read this book in the normal way – it’s a race through the pages, turning the book this way and that, following the instructions and, ultimately going round in a circle again and again. So it’s not a calm bed time book, nor is it a considered, slow read with lots of discussion. It’s over as soon as it’s started, but it’s still a mighty fun few minutes.

The book is brightly if sparsely illustrated and great fun – all yellow, green, black and red without any superfluous colours in the mix. I’m not 100% sure on the ‘wolf chasing you’ theme, though. As a child my three biggest fears were wolves, burglars and bombs, never mind that I (thankfully) never encountered any of them. It is a bit of a scary idea and you would have to vet it against the child you want to share it with before introducing it, especially at bedtime, but for the more boisterous it’s a brilliant book that’s a good game as well as a read. It’s helpfully sturdy too, which you’ll need with all the flipping and twisting of the pages you’ll need to do to keep the wolf at bay.

Assuming your child is old enough to understand (a) it’s make believe and (b) the wolf can’t hurt you, then this one is highly recommended. Completely different from anything else I’ve seen this year, it gets two big thumbs up.

It has a looooooong title, but [[The Cat, the Dog, Little Red, the Exploding Eggs, the Wolf and Grandma's Wardrobe by Diane Fox and Christyan Fox]] offers more wolfy fun for this age group.
