This is a very simple story of a missing boy and the hunt to find him. As you read, your child can join in the hunt because little Fum can be found hiding on most pages. Considering the fact that the Crumbs are giants it may seem a little odd that Fum is so very little...it's probably best not to query these things, and just to enjoy looking on each page for where he might be hiding! We get to visit the three little pigs along the way, as well as Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Told in rhyme, this helps the story flow at a good pace. The bright and lively illustrations also help the story along, and of course little ones need to take a good look at the pictures to see if they can see Fum hiding. The characters all have sweet faces, and it's nice to see the familiar characters too along the way. In the end they finally manage to find Fum up a beanstalk. He declares that he has been with them all along (which you'll know if you've been keeping an eye out!) and that he was never lost, he was just small! It's a happy ending all round, complete with normal sized cupcakes and a few giant sized ones too!
It's a good story for little ones moving on from board books to picture books as it's very easy to follow and quick to read. For my four year old I actually feel it's a little too bland as it isn't something he's asked to have again, but I think had we had this a year or so ago it would have proved popular, mainly because of the fun of the hunt for Fum on each page.
Further reading suggestion: You might also enjoy The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson which even after many, many re-reads remains one of my favourite books to read aloud!
