Orla Kiely Numbers by Orla Kiely
This counting book (from one to ten) makes a nice partner to Orla Kiely's book about colours if you're looking for a pretty gift to give to a new yummy mummy. The fabric cover is rather lovely to touch and feel, and the board book feels well constructed and able to withstand a bit of a chew from a teething baby.

Summary: Highly stylised and rather lovely to look at, but perhaps more appealing to the grown ups than the babies! | |

Each double page covers a number with one side in block colour with a stylised number, plus the name of the number below it. Then on the other page there's the relevant number of a particular object, plus that objects name, so for number 2 there are 2 apples pictured.
The images are just what you'd expect from Orla Kiely - classy and contemporary and terribly stylish. Her books will look fabulous on your coffee table next to your Orla Kiely tea pot! The colours have that softer, matt look about them, so no shiny bright colours here. I, personally, don't think the images are much fun to look at and there isn't much scope for interesting discussion whilst looking at each page - no funny creatures being silly in the background, or babies doing things that you can talk about with your own baby.
Still, the point of a counting book is to count things and so this book performs its function. We have items ranging from forks to pears to leaves to boats. I thought the cups page might be confusing since some of the cups are stacked so not to easy to identify as separate items.
I think that really this book is for mummies who wish to co-ordinate with their other Orla Kiely items, or introduce their offspring to the delights of design at an early age. It's all very nice to look at, but not very much fun to read!
