Playing for Keeps by Sally Wragg
The Vernon family have been involved with Rislington Rovers Football Club – The Rogues - for generations. Presently there are three generations actively involved with the Club, although Eleanor Vernon, the matriarch of the family, wishes that husband Landon would spend a little more time with her. As the Rogues are facing relegation and a police investigation into their finances, stalwart Landon isn’t likely to be doing that any time soon and when the Club needs a new Chief Executive the appointment is one which divides the Vernon family and it seems that there’s not one of them whose personal life isn't in turmoil.

By the time that you’re a couple of chapters in you’ll pretty much be able to predict what’s going to happen and to whom. The eighteen-year-old star footballer/tabloid bête noir by the name of Paris might give you a bit of a surprise, but then this isn’t the sort of book which you read for the unexpected twists in the plot. You read it because you’re sat on a hot beach or in front of the fire on a cold afternoon and you want a relaxing, undemanding read.
The characters are pretty much two-dimensional. Baddies stand out a mile but there’s redemption for most, even though it seems to come about for the flimsiest of reasons. All lose ends are tied up and you turn the final page with a smile hovering about your lips. If you’re interested in football you might find it an enjoyable read although I doubt that what happens would stand up to scrutiny in the real world. Suspend disbelief – enjoy an undemanding afternoon.
I’d like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
For a tongue-in-cheek look at the world of footballers’ wives and girlfriends have a look at The WAG's Diary by Alison Kervin. You might also enjoy Honey Brown is Married by Sara Judge and The Storm at the Door by Stefan Merrill Block.
