This book, though far from being the best of the genre, establishes itself as a grimdark adventure. What it really needs is some stronger foundations to establish much more firmly what's actually happening beyond that of the conflict, and to give Bifalt change to grow. There are far too many gaps in the world building for this to be successful fantasy. That being said though, those looking for a fast read full of action may find some enjoyment here.
If you like dark fantasy then it's also worth checking out [[Blackwing: The Raven's Mark Book One by Ed McDonald]] or [[Sharp Ends by Joe Abercrombie]]. We also have a review of [[The King's Justice by Stephen Donaldson]].
