If you want to know how the turkey got its spots, or what advice was given by a lion, or even why the tortoise has no hair, then this is the book for you. It holds a collection of thirty six enchanting stories that will answer these questions and many many more. There are well known fables from Ancient Greece such as The Fox and The Crow and The Boastful Toad, and many other traditional tales from countries such as Japan, Indonesia, Peurto Rico, Syria and India to mention just a few. As you would expect, with tales from so many different parts of the world, there is great variety within this collection which also enables children to read about many different cultures, beliefs and ways of life.
Each tale is retold by Bob Hartman, with an easy simplicity and most stories are generally only about three or four pages long making them an ideal bedtime read. We normally read two at night, dipping into the contents with my daughter choosing one story to read whilst I choose the other. I must say that some of the titles are quite intriguing such as The Kind of Hungry Lion and Why Dogs Chase Cats and Cats chase mice. We also like to select stories based on origin, selecting two from quite different countries. For this reason, we like the way that under each title on the contents page it states where the story comes from. As the stories are not too long and the language quite accessible, the stories are perfect for newly confident readers to read alone, as well as for sharing. We tend to share the reading, with my daughter reading her chosen story first before I read mine to her.
Each story is beautifully presented and accompanied by cute and colourful illustrations from Krisztina Kallai Nagy. These really add to the overall pleasure from each story and also helps with understanding what is being read. She has collaborated with Bob Hartman on a couple of other Lion Storyteller collections such as [[The Lion Storyteller Christmas Book by Bob Hartman and Krisztina Kallai Nagy|The Lion Storyteller Christmas Book]]. I think that these books could build into a lovely collection that your child is likely to want to dip into many times.
