To her parents, the move to Cornwall was an escape to a better way of life. For city-girl Robyn, it was wet, remote and miserable and she was counting down the days to University and her return to civilization. Desperate for something to do to entertain herself, Robyn takes a wetsuit and surfboard and makes her way to a secluded cove. An inexperienced surfer, she soon gets into difficulty, but is rescued from the sea by a young local man called Jago. From that moment on, the two lives are intertwined by an invisible bond; a bond that will be tested and stretched during the years that follow.

''The Sea Between Us'' is the story of Robyn and Jago's friendship and how it changes over the course of several years as their lives move in opposite directions. Robyn is an impulsive, intelligent and vivacious girl with a bright future ahead of her and the world at her feet. Jago, in contrast, is a quiet, contemplative young man who is happy to stay in the village and work alongside his father as a carpenter. Despite a strong attraction between the two, fate seems to be pulling them both in opposite directions and the timing never seems right for them to be together. There are plenty of lost opportunities and misunderstandings that conspire to keep the couple apart, even when circumstances seem to be bringing them closer. A missed phone call, a lost letter, the fear of confessing true feelings; each play their part in this tale of a friendship that has the potential to be so much more.

The cast of characters is small, allowing each personality to be developed to its full potential. The protagonists are both likeable characters and the reader is willing them to get together, groaning at each missed opportunity, misunderstanding and rebuff. The Cornish setting is absolutely perfect and the author reflects the changing light and landscape by means of eloquent word-pictures. The prose is an art-form in itself.

This is a story that grabs the reader and completely immerses them in a picturesque world from the first to the last page. I couldn't put it down. Many thanks to the publishers for my copy of this beautifully-written book.

Bookbag enjoyed [[Priceless by Olivia Darling]]; another engaging book that combines the scenery of Cornwall with the world of art.
